Emma Radford is a New Zealand artist based in rural Rotorua working across watercolour, oil, charcoal, and digital illustration. Alongside her artistic practice, she works in conservation, helping protect native species and restore forest ecosystems; work that underpins much of her creative focus and shapes the way she observes form, detail, and character in the natural world.
Drawn to animals and the human face, she works with a clean, elegant, and precise realism, focusing on subtle expression and the quiet individuality of her subjects. Emma’s portrait work is deeply personal: a response to emotion and a pull toward the canvas. Through painting, she engages in retrospective introspection, examining memory and past feeling through careful, deliberate mark-making.
In contrast, her graphic and nature-focused pieces arise from her conservation work, reflecting a commitment to creating refined, timeless imagery that celebrates and advocates for the protection of indigenous species. Together, these threads form her artistic voice: intentional, contemplative, and grounded equally in personal expression and a deep respect for the living world.
